Venus Turns Retrograde on 5 October 2018
Venus Retrogrades on 5 October 2018
If any of what is written below makes you feel worried or that you’re in for a tough time, I’ll start by saying that, 4 years ago, I went on a pilgrimage and I especially chose the dates of my pilgrimage to coincide with Venus’ retrograde at that time.
What happened for me then and the people I met was so magical and profound, I still count it as one of my greatest blessings today. What happens for you in a Venus Retrograde could also be something that goes on to become something you’ll hold dear to your heart for years and years to come.
As with all things, it is our intention and how we engage with what is going that matters the most.
What is the venus retrograde about?
Venus Retrograde… Venus in Scorpio… Venus opposite Uranus
A great test.
Consequences and working through the consequences of previous shady acts.
A descent into the deepest parts of yourself.
Figuring out what you desire, finding out that what you really want isn’t necessarily what you’ve always thought you wanted.
Transformation in areas to do with lovers, love, being loved, self worth, money, possessions, talents, abilities.
Working the ground and planting the seeds for a landscape (whether literally or metaphorically) which you would like to see flourish.
Remembering… you are the Ruler of Your Moments, not allowing anyone to knock you off your own throne.
Listening to your own voice.
Breaking out of the status quo.
How to go through it?
Going through Scorpio….
Be willing to explore new territories within yourself but know and absolutely stick to your moral compass. Make it your tightrope through the abyss.
Know that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Another tightrope through the abyss.
Respect the sovereignty of self of others…do not try to manipulate, threaten or cajole others into doing what you want.
If things are going on with people around you …know that it’s their stuff. Try not to let their stuff become your stuff…try to hold compassion for them as they go through their stuff. There’s a saying, perfectly apt even if not designed to describe Venus in Scorpio: “Hesperus is Phosphorous”… that Hesperus (Venus as Evening Star) is Phosphorous (Venus as Morning Star) … in this context, we’re all the same, we’re all bright beings, we all have stuff to get through too.
Notice what’s going on: difficulties around where you’re stuck, repetitive destructive patterns, addictions, intrigue, drama and so forth… Notice where you’re triggered…don’t get caught up in it, don’t drown in it: just gently acknowledge it, be aware of it and keep going. Love your demons.
Honour your heart… whatever is in it.
Know that there are opportunities within this to practice things which will make you stronger and that this strength will stand the test of time.
Give your process time… don’t put pressure on yourself to have all the answers right this very second.
Know that Scorpio can be the dark and that the dark is where we find our treasure…by going into this place, you can come out covered in its gold.
Know that Scorpio is the sign of greatest intimacy… finding out more about yourself and others…being vulnerable…being less than perfect… sharing it with yourself, sharing it with others.
Share the sweetness of Venus…both with yourself and with others who are also in the dark. Make honey.
Remember, change and transformation… 10 / 10 it’s the party the fey love.
On 5 October 2018, a date that reduces to 8... that number whose shape looks like the symbol of infinity … and at 8pm my time, the planet whose polar vortex most often forms the shape of an 8 will have slowed to a halt in our sky and will start to move backwards in her retrograde.
Her polar vortex doesn’t always form the shape of an 8… her second favourite shape is a serpentine S… and still…. it can take the shape of anything it likes: of all of the planets who have shapes on their vortices, Venus has the most shape shifting shapes of all them all.
Shrouded in cloud, she’s an enigma: Her day is longer than her year and her day is getting longer still. Yet, while her spin on her axis is slowing, there’s no doubt that the pace of her winds are increasing.
Her Sun rises in the West while for everyone else it rises in the East and yet, still, she gets to be Morning Star, the herald of our dawn. Her Sun sets in the East while for everyone else it sets in the West and yet, still, she gets to be Evening Star, the brightest light in our Evening’s Sky.
She has no magnetic field and yet, in Astrology, she’s known for her magnetism, for attracting to her that which she wants.
Her surface boils and burns… hotter even than the surface of Mercury who is that much closer to the Sun. Hers is a barren landscape, marked with the scars left by volcanoes and yet she is the planet of love.
She is our nearest neighbour: nearest in proximity, nearest in size, nearest in mass. She’s our twin.
For Aeons her movements through the heavens and the way in which they have correlated with events on our Earth have fascinated people the world over. In Mesoamerica she’s associated with the bringing of rains, waters which can be associated with the waters of Tlaloc, feelings of paradise, and with the corn that keeps us well fed.
Within her cycle in the heavens we find that, over 8 of our Earth years, she aligns with Earth and the Sun 5 times, each point making a mark that leads to the creation of a five pointed star... a symbol of the human being.
8 and 5… her retrogrades are around 40 days long, a number that is octagonal and made up of the sum of the first four pentagonal numbers…octagonal of 8 and pentagonal of 5.
40 itself is a time period associated with great tests…of a time of testing between one great period and another…of moving from one epoch to another:
40 days and 40 nights it rained during the Great Flood;
40 days and 40 nights of Jesus fasting in the desert and then being tempted by the Devil;
40 days that Goliath challenged Israel before he was defeated by David; and so forth…
This Venus Retrograde
Myths associated with Venus speak of great tests. Of descents into the self, into underworlds and of rising triumphant thereafter. And, if there’s anything that knows how to test us… if there’s anything that can take us into and, depending on how we handle it, out of our greatest darkness and towards our greatest heights…its Scorpio and Scorpio’s ruler, Pluto…the sign in which she will be retrograding now. And…let’s not forget, she ends this retrograde smiling, at her strongest, in one of the signs that she rules herself.
During her retrograde, she will be the Ruler of a New Moon and the Ruler of a Full Moon, the latter taking place in the critical degree of zero… at 00°08’!! (Remember? the eight!) This is especially interesting, especially exciting, given that it’s on the day that the Mean North Node of the Moon, the direction in which we’re meant to be headed, steps into the sign of Cancer, the sign of the Moon, that Venus will be stationing to go direct. I’ll write more on this later, no doubt.
She kicks it off with a square, a challenge to Scorpio’s ancient ruler, Mars, who is literally just out of the shadow of his own retrograde. But, once she dips back into her own sign of Libra, the lovers will be looking at each other with a sparkle in their eyes. There’s the sense of, for months in the past and right up until now, having been through a great struggle, a great tension and whether that results in a resolution or in freeing the self from the situation, what comes next looks to be promising. So, they may be the same lovers transformed…they may be completely new… Whatever it is…however it plays out…her opposition to Uranus is calling for a breaking out of the status quo. This applies to loving and being loved, creativity, nature, food, our possessions, what we value, our sense of self-worth, how we get what we want and rather more fundamentally…what exactly it is that we want.
During the retrograde, Venus will pass directly in front of the Sun, becoming invisible. This time is known as the inferior conjunction and it’s a time that’s recognised as having coincided with the downfall of leaders for the underhanded and secret things they have done….for example, it was around the inferior conjunction of 16 January 1998 that the news of the Bill Clinton / Monica Lewinsky scandal that ultimately led to the president’s impeachment broke.
As she steps out from the inferior conjunction and once she gets to being around 5° away from the Sun, she will be visible again…but she will have moved from having been Evening Star and now she will be Morning Star, travelling ahead of the Sun. And although she turns direct relatively soon, on November 16 2018, she will remain Morning Star until 14 August 2019 when she next aligns with the Sun, passes behind him and become Evening Star again.
This descent of hers into the Scorpionic Underworld… Venus who speaks of desire…Scorpio who speaks of desire and their commonality in spiritualising the instinct… it’s a real opportunity to look at and transform yourself. Some say, that during her phase as Morning Star, we’re more likely to behave on an individual level…following our instincts, what we want…rather than thinking of the collective, which we’re more likely to do during her phase as Evening Star.
Thinking of the individual and thinking of the collective…neither are right, neither are wrong… they each have their pro’s and their cons. Bringing what’s in you, the individual to the fore…it can be just exactly what is needed to help break out of the status quo…particularly with her opposition to Uranus, who is all about bringing what is unique in the one into the pot that is us all.
What’s on the other side of the status quo? Well, who knows…as within, so without… but Scorpio offers you the opportunity to align what it is that you want and how you attract it to you with the highest, or, at least, a higher, expression of who you are. Venus, she has a warrior side to her nature but, ultimately, the declarations and the treaties she’s seeking are those that are declarations of peace.
If great tests… 40 days and 40 nights… descents into the underworld… if all this sounds to be an impossible task, well, Venus often features in stories that involve impossible tasks. Just think of Quetzlcoatl (Venus) who, in the form of an ant, managed to bring corn to the people which none of the other gods had managed before him. He fetched just one grain of corn which, once planted, went on to become the seed of riches for the entire Aztec nation. Just think of Quetzlcoatl (Venus) who, with the help of some bees, and from deep in the Underworld, returned to the surface with the bones which would become the basis for our entire kind.
Does this Venus Retrograde impact you?
It impacts everyone as she’s moving somewhere in everyone’s chart. Look to the houses in your chart to see which areas of your life are most impacted. Her effects are felt even stronger if she touches one of your planets or one of your angles. Her effects are also felt strongly if she rules something important in your chart. If you have a birthday during the retrograde, it will be in your Solar Return (a chart cast for the moment the Sun reaches the same degree it was in when you were born) and so it’s effects will be felt for the whole year ahead.
She’s moving between 25°14’ of Libra and 10°50’ Scorpio
You will feel this especially if you have planets or points between these degrees of 25°14’ of Libra and 10°50’ Scorpio or between:
25°14’ Aries and 10°50’ Taurus
25°14 Cancer and 10°50’ Leo
25°14’ Capricorn and 10°50’ Aquarius
The effects will be felt particularly strongly if one of the planets you have between these degrees is either Venus herself, Pluto, the Sun, the Moon or the Ruler of the Ascendant, Midheaven or even of the Nodes.
The effects will also be felt strongly if you have Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Descendant, MC or IC in either Taurus or Libra (i.e. ruled by Venus.)
Look to the house in your chart that Venus is moving through as she retrogrades to see where this may impact you. This will be even stronger if Taurus / Libra are on the cusp of the house she is moving through or if she is moving through your second or seventh house.
Also look to the house that Venus is in in your own chart. Look to any planets she makes contact with, the houses they are in and the houses they rule.
(This is necessarily brief, an astrologer will take the whole chart as well as what all the other planets are doing in the heaven while she retrogrades into account.)
If you don’t know where your planets are, or which houses fall over the degrees she is moving through, this site will calculate it for you for free: https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/ (please bear in mind, I am not responsible for external sites / content on external sites.)
If you do go on the site, enter your details and you can click on extended settings where you can select the house system you would like to use (I always use Equal Houses.) There’s a table on the right hand side that spells out the name of the planet next to its symbol, setting out the degree that the planet is in. The Descendant and IC are always directly opposite the Ascendant and MC respectively.
If you do go on the site, knowing the astrology symbols for the signs will help:
♈ Aries, ♉ Taurus, ♊ Gemini, ♋ Cancer, ♌ Leo, ♍ Virgo, ♎ Libra, ♏ Scorpio, ♐ Sagittarius, ♑ Capricorn, ♒ Aquarius, ♓ Pisces
