Pythagoras tells us there’s a song that sounds which we don’t hear because it’s been playing for all our lives…it must be there because objects which move create pitch and we know that the heavenly bodies move…it must be beautiful because we can work out the harmonies by number and the intervals between the planets are harmonious (1)…this song that sounds is the Harmony of the Spheres, it's a beauty expressed in music, made up of the many and the distinct voices of the planets...it's always changing and always the same.

According to Pythagoras, ‘All is Number, God is Number,’ and the Number reveals the secret meaning of All.

That numbers have a frequency, that numbers can be associated with letters and that numbers can reveal hidden meanings is Arithmancy or Numerology...Divination by Number.

Numerology didn’t begin with Pythagoras…Antiquity holds its origin...and, like language, there are many versions...It can be said that this version is so readily available to us because Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa... the famous Mage...applied Pythagorean thinking to the Latin Alphabet we use today...(2)

In this system, A=1, B=2, C=3 etc. until we get to Z=26....2+6=8 and so Z=8. It looks like this:

We swap the letters of a name or a word with its number….add the numbers together and then keep adding the numbers in the result until we get to a single number. Certain numbers are called Master Numbers and are never reduced: Eleven, Twenty Two, Thirty Three, Forty Four…

Given All is Number and that there is a lot of ‘All,’ it’s not easy to pick a keyword for each number... but here goes: One Initiates, Two Relates, Three Creates, Four Builds, Five Changes, Six Balances, Seven Seeks, Eight Perpetuates, it Empowers, Nine Loves Universally. The Master Numbers have greater potential and their expression requires more effort. Their meaning is derived from the numbers they're made up of as well as the numbers that they add up to...for example, Eleven has to do with both 1 and 2 as it's made up of two ones and adds up to two.

Numbers describe the becoming of something out of the no-thing.... numbers describe the ways in which that which is manifested can return to the All. Numbers can be associated with Planets, numbers tell us more about the Tarot, they shed light upon the Kabbalistic Tree of Life... they do all this and more... In and of themselves, Numbers are neither good nor bad...it's the intention, our free will, which colours their characteristics...

We can apply numerology to anything...Take the word ‘Numbers’ for example. The number which equals the total of the word sheds light upon the hidden meaning of the whole word…this is the aim of the word, what it is here to do. The numerical value of the sum of the consonants (3) reveals something of the meaning of the outer personality of the word…something similar to the persona….the numerical value of the sum of the vowels gives us something of the inner meaning (sometimes called the Soul Number or the Heart’s Desire) of the word... It looks like this:

Here's a brief interpretation...bearing in mind, the All is contained in numbers and there's a lot of the All... this is only one of the many possible stories...

When we first encounter Numbers, Numbers comes across as creative…Numbers can be used to make something…just as Numbers create, Numbers is also the creation. Numbers has a Soul Urge towards infinity and the way in which Numbers does this is through creativity. Numbers creates infinity and is infinitely creative. The word ‘Numbers’ tells us that, with Maths, anything is truly possible.

Taken as a whole….Numbers is here to give expression to the Master Number Eleven. This is a higher level of the number Two (One plus One = Two) ….a higher level of relating which is made up of two wholes. At this level, there is no suppression of parts of the self to appease the other…it is the relating (two) of wholes (ones) which enables both the known and the unknown to be explored…Eleven reflects the light of the known into the unknown and the light of the unknown into the known...which, in the context of ‘Numbers’ is enabled by infinite creativity and creating infinity...

If All is Number...if every single one of us is the Microcosm of the Macrocosm…then ‘Number’ (without the S) tells us that we relate (2 = outer expression of number) to infinity (inner expression of number) by becoming whole (total value of Number without the 's' = 1) ... And with more than one doing this, Number becomes Numbers and the potential of One becomes the potential of Eleven...

You can apply this to your name…use all the names on your birth certificate, try it with your first name and your surname and try it with the name by which you are called today...for example, try it with your nickname if you have one or, if you are married and changed your surname, try it with that…see whether the different numbers shed light upon the different ways in which you have expressed yourself.

You can also apply this to your birthday. The number you get is called the Life’s Lesson number…that which you have come here to learn. Reduce the day and the month and the year …add the three numbers together and reduce. For example, 23 February 2018 = 5 (2+3) + 2 + 11 (2+0+1+8)….this equals 18 which equals 9.

You can also use numbers to calculate cycles of time...for example, if you would like to know more about the year that you're in, add the day and the month of your birth date to the year of your last birthday. The final number tells you something about your current annual cycle.

There is so much that can be written about every number and every number holds something really interesting, something very special. Just as the symbols in your Astrology chart can be doorways through which we walk into more and more and more and more, so too can the numbers and their meanings be woven together in infinite ways. If you do try this with you name and with your birthday, I hope you will have fun!

P.S. The total of the word ‘Creates’ is 8 and so one interpretation is that Creates has infinity or empowerment as its aim. Creates' outer expression is 6 and its heart’s desire is 11. We could say that ‘Creates’ empowers by heart centred expression of explorations of the known and the unknown. The total of the word ‘Infinity’ is 7 and so we could say it aims towards finding the answers of the universe by seeking, studying and contemplating (external expression = 7) the universe and universal love (internal expression = 9)...We could go on forever.... The total of the word 'Forever' is 44 ....a Master Number....it could be said that 'Forever' aims to establish (number 4) eternity and empowerment, (4+4=8) Its outer expression is 1 and its inner expression is 7 ....'Forever' establishes eternity and empowerment through discoveries made (outer expression = 1) via seeking answers (internal expression = 7)...through asking, not assuming, and never knowing it all...

Here's one I really like...the word 'Blessing' ...a Master Number to do with creativity from the heart, with the bringing in of balance, with joyful service unto others (Total Number = 33)...which expresses itself by beginning or initiating (outer expression = 1) freedom and change (internal expression = 5)...by being free to be oneself...

(1) As measured by their distance from Earth.

(2) You and I...if you're reading this...use the Latin Alphabet today...

(3) If you find it difficult to remember what the consonants and the vowels represent...think of the way the consonants sound in your mouth...they're hard and held like a jar compared to the breathy softness of the vowels...so think of the consonants as the container, what we see first, before we get to the soft stuff inside.
